The city of Allen was originally envisioned as a stop on the Atchison, Topeka & Santa Fe Railway that would serve farmers north of Dallas. In 1872, the Houston and Texas Central Railroad built a station in Allen and naming it after Ebenezer B. Allen, who was one of the original directors of the railroad. The city was incorporated in 1953 with a population of less than 1,000 people. Since then, it has grown rapidly due to the construction of U.S. Route 75 (Central Expressway), which runs through the city.

The average household size was 2.98 and the average family size was 3.37 persons.

In Allen, 32% of the population were under age 18; 5% were ages 18–20; 34% ages 21–44; 23% ages 45–64; and 6% age 65 years or older. The median age was 35 years. For every 100 females there were 99 males—a sex ratio of 1 male per 100 females that was lower than both nationwide averages during this time period: 102 males per 100 females for all U.S places and 106 males per 100 females for all Texas places—and for all Collin County places as well as all places within incorporated limits throughout Texas during 2010 Census tabulations.[citation needed]
